Admission Arrangements

• Most parents/guardians will receive an application pack for Starting Nursery School from the County Admissions office in the Autumn Term before their child is due to start school - this application process should be followed.
• A letter from the Nursery will be sent to parents/guardians the term before their child is due to start Nursery school formally offering them a place and the school registration procedure will follow.
• Once your child has been offered a place, parents/guardians will be invited to a New Parents Evening where they have the opportunity to meet the staff and look around the Children's Centre.
• Before children start at the Nursery School, parents/guardians will be offered a Home Visit by appropriate members of staff. Parents/guardians are encouraged to share specific information about their child at this time e.g. dietary needs, health concerns.
• At the beginning of the child's first term, parents/guardians are required to stay and support their children on the first day for the first part of the session.

THE NURSERY

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and we at the British School Nursery provide the the foundations for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow.The British School Nursery Programme is based on the National Curriculum for England, with the Early Years Foundation Stage as its guide. To meet the Early Learning, our environment has been designed specifically with goals.We provide a sessional programme for 3-4 year old children's physical, emotional and educational needs. Our daily routine provides fun activities which is our priority. Each learning area in the programme fosters the children's different interests in a supportive and caring manner.
We recognise that children capabilities, home backgrounds and cultures differ.Iin this age group learning is through play. This is why our programme is based on planned play experiences that enhance children's development and stimulate their curious minds. Our day will provide your child with the opportunity to work within a structured, yet flexible routine, which will flow with their needs. Our small group size and high staff ratios will ensure that each child's learning is individualised, whilst challenging and achievable. This will enable every child's learning journey to be supported through our range of experiences. We also recognise the importance of parents and practitioners working together to support and extend children in this early years setting.

Information on nursery education in Cambridgeshire

• There are 6 nursery schools and 22 nursery classes in Cambridgeshire, all offering part-time early years education for children from the term after their 3rd birthday.
• Applications for places in the spring of 2007 must be made by 1 December 2006, those for places in summer 2007 by 1 March, while those for places in autumn 2007 by 1 June 2007.
• If you wish to apply for a place at one of the nursery schools or classes you should make arrangements to see the headteacher of the school concerned and pick up a copy of the policy and nursery application form.

Pupils with Special Educational Needs

The School does not discriminate against any pupil or parent whose child wishes to enrol, or is enrolled under the terms and conditions of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001). We welcome enquiries and applications from all boys and girls. Entrance to the School is competitive and based on academic ability.
Individual arrangements can be made, subject to reasonable adjustments, for boys and girls with special educational needs to ensure that the examination (or other assessment) for entrance to Colfe’s is accessible to all. Pupils with special educational needs are admitted according to the same criteria as other pupils, provided that admission is compatible with:

• the provision of efficient education for the children with whom he/ she will be educated
• the efficient use of resources

There are no special facilities at the School for pupils who are physically disabled, nor any special units. However the School is committed to the integration of pupils with a wide range of needs, and their involvement in the whole life of the school, in line with our Equal Opportunities Policy and the terms of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001).

Admission Criteria for St Joseph’s Nursery School

Admissions to the school are made by the Governors. The Governors intend to accept 52 children –twenty six in the morning and twenty six in the afternoon into the Nursery. St Joseph’s serves three parishes namely Virgo Fidelis, St Matthews and St Margaret Clitherow. St Joseph’s is a Catholic School, which is normally very over subscribed: The Governors therefore observe the following criteria precisely; they are in order of priority

• Looked after Catholic Children
• Baptised Catholic children being brought up in the Catholic faith who live within the parish boundaries of the three named parishes, who regularly worship at Catholic Mass.
• Baptised Catholic children being brought up in the Catholic faith who live outside the parish boundaries of the three named parishes, who regularly worship at Catholic Mass.
• Baptised Catholic children being brought up in the Catholic faith who live within the parish boundaries of the three named parishes, who worship intermittently at Catholic Mass.
• Baptised Catholic children being brought up in the Catholic faith who live outside the parish boundaries of the three named parishes, who worship intermittently at Catholic Mass.
• Other looked after children.
• Christian children of other denominations whose parents are in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the school and whose application is supported by the Minister.
• Children of other faiths whose parents are in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the school and who can provide evidence of regular practice of their faith.
• Any other applicants.

The attendance of a brother or sister at either St Joseph’s Infant or St Joseph’s Junior School at the time of entry will take priority over applications, within each category, who do not have siblings.

Admission to School

It is most helpful for advance planning if we know how many children will be starting school each year. For this reason, if you have any young children and wish them to
attend Edgar Sewter Primary, or the Nursery, please contact the school. All children for the Nursery will be put on our Admittance Register, no matter how young. Every effort is made to ensure a smooth progression from home/Nursery to school. The parents have a meeting with the Reception class teachers, and the children have a series of classroom visits prior to their admission.
The Nursery children participate in the life of the school and use school facilities for some of their activities.
Parents of young children transferring form another school are encouraged to visit the school for a pre-transfer welcoming visit.
Children are admitted to the school (not Nursery) as follows:
1. In September if they become 5 on, or before, 31st December.
2. In January if they become 5 on, or before, 30th April.
3. After Easter if they become 5 on, or before, 31st August.
Any variation to this timetable needs the personal approval of the Area Education Manager.

If my child has special educational needs, how will this affect my application?

If your child has special educational needs this does not affect you obtaining a place at your preferred school you just follow the same procedure when applying for a nursery place, places can not be refused because of a child having Special Educational Needs. In certain circumstances when a child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs this can state that the child should attend a particular school as a result of their SEN, this should be adhered to. What is the Foundation Stage Cirriculum?

Effective early education requires a special and relevant curriculum led by practitioners who know all about your child. The Foundation Stage Cirriculum has six areas of learning, all equally important.

• Personal, Social & Emotional Development.
• Communication, Language and Literacy.
• Mathematical Development.
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
• Physical Development.

Children develop rapidly during this time time, physically, intellectually, creatively, socially and emotionally. The Foundation Stage is about developing key learning skills such as listening, speaking, concentration, persistence and learning to work together and co-operate with other children. It is also about developing early communication, literacy and numeracy skills that they will develop further in Key Stage 1 of the National Cirriculum.

Medicines
To administer medicine of any kind we require a parental letter and either a Doctors prescription or letter. These must show the date, times and quantity to be administered. Medicines must be brought in by parents, and clearly labelled with the child’s name. A record is kept of all medicines given and parents/carers guardians must countersign this.
Behaviour
We encourage good behaviour by praise and explanation. The children soon learn what is expected of them and respond to reward, encouragement and disapproval. We never, under any circumstances, use physical punishment in any form. Should unsociable behaviour arise, we explain to the child why such behaviour is not acceptable. Parents are always informed of any behavioural concerns.
Equal Concern Policy
Quality child care involves valuing every child equally, and affirming the positive value of different skin colours, genders, religious, cultural and family backgrounds. We aim to give children a realistic picture of the world they live in, and correct distortions and prejudices about that world. The Nursery has an equal opportunities policy.
Individual Needs Policy
All children are individual and unique. We provide safe, stimulating play and education in an environment where individual needs are met by staff expertise and a wealth of resources.

Admission arrangements and starting nursery

In many parts of Hackney, children aged 3 and 4 can go to nursery classes attached to primary or nursery schools. The age your child can go depends on the number of places available. Some nursery places are for half a day (morning or afternoon), others for the whole day. Going to a nursery school or nursery class gives children a valuable introduction to school. It gives them the opportunity to develop their skills and be part of a large group of children of their own age in a happy and relaxed atmosphere.
The day is arranged so that children can develop at their own pace. If your child attends a nursery class attached to a primary school there is no guarantee that your child will transfer into the reception class at the same school. There is no right of appeal for admission to nursery classes and nursery schools.

Allocation procedure for nursery places

The University's nursery provision is oversubscribed, and there is a long waiting list. However, due to the change in the waiting list procedures from 1 March 2004 and the opening of the new nursery at Jack Straws Lane there is a greater chance of being offered places than in previous years. Parents who fall into priority groups will be allocated places first. Thereafter, all other applicants are offered places (when available) according to the date when they applied. The priority groups are parents or children with a disability, those who have been nominated under the sponsored places scheme, lone parents, and those with a sibling already in a university nursery or a nursery where we have subsidised places.

School Admission System & Procedures

Admission Procedure

Admission is open to everyone irrespective of caste, creed and religion. However, the school reserves the right to admit or refuse admission to a candidate at its discretion as per its own criteria of admission.

Eligibility

For admission to class Nursery, a child should have completed the age of 3 years on 1st April of the year but should not have completed 4 years on the said date. Corresponding increase in age will apply for higher classes. For admission to class XI (if any) the eligibility criteria will be on the basis of merit.

Transport Facilities

The school has twenty two buses of its own and the rest are hired buses which run on the specified routes only. The buses hired on the yearly basis are reasonably comfortable and suitable to the requirements of even small children. The transport facility is permitted for the complete academic year.

Transport Rules

1. The school makes transport arrangements for the children by hiring buses on an annual contract explicitly on request from parents.
2. Students availing the transport arrangement are required to obtain a Route Pass/User Identity Card from the School Office on payment of stipulated bus fee.
3. Unauthorised travelling in the hired buses is viewed as a serious offence and can lead to a fine of Rs.500/-
4. Parents are expected to co-operate with the school by ensuring that their children travelling in the buses report at their embarking points well on time, carry their User Identity card with them all the time and behave in a disciplined way, in the interest of their own safety as well as that of the other users.
5. Intentional vandalism such as breaking window-panes, tearing and cutting of seat covers, defacing the interior of the bus and any other related offence will result in heavy damage penalty and expulsion from the facility.
6. Parents are requested to study the specified routes and opt for those which suit them the best. Please remember that it is not possible to cater to individual requirements at the cost of time and distance.
7. In case there is a genuine grievance, it should be submitted in writing to the Teacher escorting the bus or to the Administrative Officer.
8. The use of bus facility cannot be discontinued in the middle of a session. It may, however, be discontinued latest by 10th July, in case of transfer/change of address, after submitting an application to the Administrative Officer 15 days in advance.

Unfortunately the school site (be careful!!!) is full of spam scripts and it's being blocked by anti-virus tools. If you dont have a good anti-virus installed on your machine - DO NOT OPEN THIS SITE!!!

Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai, Panchsheel Park - baby's day out!

Apeejay School, (Sheikh Sarai, Saket and Pitam Pura) has come out with their first list, I am sure by now most of us have got used to "not seeing" their lil' ones on the lists.

Congratulations to all those who have made to this list!! :)

The cut-off (score of the kid who is last on the selection list) is 65 marks. Myself being computer nurd, I keep doing experiments with the stuff I come across on net, and to my surprise, the school site of prone to "hacking" which is really a bad bad thing. This is hard-core programming stuff, has nothing to do with Nursery Admissions as such ;)

I am planning to inform the school tomorrow about this vulnerability so that they can secure the site information. Spyder is not that bad either - I am after schools for voilating norms and after DOE and Mr. Lovely so letting them do . Can't help it!

Just FYI, my kid also "failed" to make it to Apeejay (7 down out of 19, 12 more to go...) currently he is not aware of what we are going thru for his admission to a bigger school. He is busy playing "Need for Speed" on my laptop and can easily drive the car thru rough pathces on road....I am still learning on the roads of life though...

Problems/issues reported by parents and data verified from the school site:
It is confirmed that Apeejay (Saket, Sheikh Sarai and Pitam Pura - all three) has done soemething fishy with the list. There are kids with 40, 45, 50 marks who are on the selection list and there are those with 50, 58, 54 who have not made it to the list.

We are sending e-mail to school, lets see what resposne we get, if you have reported the problem to the school and have any info/response from school (any tele conv, mails etc), please share it with us. If we don't hear back from school within next 24 hours, let's see what can be done here!

Modern School, Shalimar Bagh - I filled the form for pre-primary in but I received a call from the school that my child is not fit for pre-primary and I should fill the form for pre-nursery and the next day of filling my form, they have asked openly for a donation of Rs. 30,000/- January 15, 2008 4:39 PM

Red Roses Public School, Saket, New Delhi
This school is taking written test of kids, they are asking kids to write alphabets, numbers. Parents are asked to stand away from kids and they also ask kids to chant/sing 1-2 rhymes. The best part is the kid gets candy at the end of this test. - 14-jan-2008

2) This requires urgent attention. In Ryan International, Vasant Kunj, they are inviting parents for interaction (basis unknown). When I called up to enquire about the interaction, I got the reply that the list will be put up on 1st Feb. and there is no interaction prior to that. Then on what basis they are calling the parents for interaction. Something fishy??? What kind of value education these schools will provide to our children??? - 25th January 2008
